4 Tips to a Healthy, Summer Glow

Hot days, cool nights could only mean one thing – the summer is upon us. And for many of us, that means time to sport a summer glow. But before stepping out for that sun kissed look, follow these four tips for a healthy, safe summer tan.

Exfoliate You Skin

Exfoliation is the key to achieving the best possible tan outdoors. Not only does it remove the dead skin cells from the uppermost layer of the skin, it allows for fresh skin to appear. Removing the dead cells can even your skin tone, remove dirt and oil within pores and prevent acne. Think of it as prepping your skin for a clean slate to tan more easily without additional buildup acting as a barrier.

Apply Sunscreen

The perfect summer glow can still be achieved with sunscreen. Sun protection factor (SPF) helps extend the time of sun exposure without suffering additional skin damage. To protect yourself while outdoor tanning, remember to apply sunscreen 15-30 minutes before you go in the sun, reapply 15 to 30 minutes after you have been exposed to the sun and reapply again after any aquatic activity. Use at least SPF 30, and for fair skin, consider SPF 50.

Avoid Overexposure

A healthy, sun kissed glow is gradual, never overexposed. Divide your time under the sun evenly to reduce overexposure and sunburn. While a whole day at the beach may give you a tan look for the day, it may leave you with sunburn and skin dehydration. The best way to achieve a glowing tan is in small doses. Consider half an hour to an hour under the sun each day to allow your body to produce adequate melanin to aid in your next tanning session.

Wear Your Shades and Top It Off

Rock your shades and a hat. The skin around your eyes is delicate to UV rays, and improper care can result in the development of eye diseases such as cataract, age-related macular degeneration and eye cancers. To best protect your eyes, consider sunglasses that are labeled “UV absorption up to 400nm” or “Meets ANSI UV Requirements” – as these indicate protection from 99 percent of UV rays. Just remember, to avoid an uneven tan, don’t fall asleep with them on and top off with a hat for additional protection.

Conclusion

Remember to enjoy the fun in the sun with these four safe summer tanning tips, and you will be well on your way to the perfect, summer look. Shade yourself in between breaks when tanning between l1am and 3pm, and always moisturize your skin before and after to lock in hydration.
