Is Breast Revision More Popular in 2020?

3 Minute Read:

Breast augmentation remains the most popular surgical procedure today in the United States. However, with this popularity, the prominence of breast revision has also risen. One of the emerging trends for breast revision is the desire to exchange the size of implants following previous breast augmentation or remove the breast implants altogether.

Here, we will explore how lifestyle changes and other factors following initial breast augmentation can change your cosmetic needs.

Can I Change Implant Size During a Breast Revision?

One of the most common requests during a breast revision is an alteration in implant size. While an increase in size has always been in demand, some doctors performing breast revisions have witnessed a noticeable increase in women who desire smaller implant sizes. Throughout the nation, medium to full-size B cups and C cups are beginning to trend.

There are several reasons why doctors believe an increased desire for small implants might be occurring. One reason is that there is a strong appeal to have more proportional, natural-looking breasts. Young women are requesting a subtle alteration in their breast size rather than a pronounced alteration.

Another reason women may desire to downsize their breast implants is to accommodate their change in lifestyle. For example, a shift from low-intensity exercise to high-intensity exercises can make women uncomfortable or cautious of implant displacement or rupture. This is particularly the case for women who have become more involved in athletic exercises or the fitness industry.

Smaller breast implants can be more comfortable and less cumbersome.

Why Have Breast Implant Removals Gained Popularity?

There are several reasons why a woman may want breast implant removal, and studies show a 15 percent increase in breast implant removals between 2018 and 2019. Some doctors expect to see this trend continue in 2020.

Doctors find that one of the common reasons women decide to get breast implant removal is because of medical conditions, such as capsular contracture. Capsular contracture occurs when the natural scar tissue forms a capsule thickens and constricts around the implants. Capsular contracture occurs during breast augmentation recovery and can cause hardening of the breast, misshapenness, or, in severe cases, pain. Thankfully, surgeons like Dr. Chiu can perform breast revision surgery to restore the breasts to a more appealing condition and reduce potential health risks.

Another potential reason for the 2019 increase in breast revision (and decrease in breast augmentation procedures) stems from concern between the possible link between particular styles and brands of textured implants and breast implant-associated anaplastic large-cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL)—a rare form of cancer that forms in the scar tissue around the implant (it is NOT breast cancer). This link was published last year with a voluntary recall of particular implants brands. While doctors and the FDA suggest that women do not remove their implants due to concern, these statistics demonstrate that many women may have chosen to do so anyway.

It is important to note that breast implants are very safe, and serious complications are rare.

Will I Need Secondary Breast Surgery?

Dr. Chiu can help women continue their cosmetic journey after breast implant replacement or breast implant removal. Dr. Chiu can perform a breast lift to address any sagging caused by large breast implants. Breast lifts raise the breasts to a higher-sitting position, restore firmness, and recenter the nipples for a natural projection.
