Facelift Revision
(Secondary Facelift)
A facelift provides a youthful aesthetic to the lower face, and the results typically last several years. Although the effects of this procedure are long-lasting, facelift surgery does not negate the effects of gravity or the natural aging process. To maintain a rejuvenated appearance or address unsatisfactory results, many men and women choose to undergo facelift revision. Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr. Gabriel Chiu performs facelift revision to restore his patients’ appearance and produce beautiful facial rejuvenation results. After discussing your goals and evaluating your face, Dr. Chiu will recommend the corrections that will deliver more natural results that look less “done.” Patients are usually delighted with the results of their secondary facelift, and they can expect to look youthful for many more years to come.
Thinking About Facelift Revision?
-
Sagging Lower Facial Tissue
Facelift surgery does not halt the aging process, so patients may experience sagging skin or muscle laxity in the lower face over time. Facelift revision can target signs of aging that develop after an initial procedure and restore a more youthful facial aesthetic.
-
Midfacial Rejuvenation
Because the face continues to change and age, patients may lose some facial definition years after their original surgery. A lack of definition can be attributed to skin laxity or the loss of volume in the midface and cheeks. With facelift revision, patients can improve their facial contours and obtain a more attractive appearance.
-
Visible Scarring
Sometimes, due to poor healing or surgical technique, a patient can be left with visible scarring after their facelift surgery. During facelift revision, Dr. Chiu can help minimize displeasing scars from a previous procedure as well as signs of aging that may have developed.
Facelift Revision Recovery
-
Immediately After
The recovery from facelift revision will be similar to that of your initial procedure. Dr. Chiu will place bandages around the incisions to minimize swelling. A drainage tube may be needed to remove any excess fluid. Prescription medication can help manage any pain or discomfort during your recovery.
-
1 Week
Although many patients return to work about one week after surgery, any strenuous activity and exercise should be avoided for at least four to six weeks. Side effects should subside considerably at this point in your recovery.
-
2 to 3 Weeks
There should be a significant improvement in postoperative bruising and swelling. Patients may engage in light activities.
-
4 to 6 Weeks
Once cleared by Dr. Chiu, you may continue exercise and all usual activities. Some patients feel tightness in the treated areas for several months, but their final results should be visible.

Facelift Revision FAQs
Am I a candidate for facelift revision?
Ideal candidates for facelift revision must be healthy and have realistic expectations of their results. They should also stop smoking and taking anti-inflammatory medications two weeks before surgery. If your facial appearance is beginning to show signs of aging, or if you wish to correct a past facelift procedure, you may qualify for facelift revision. This procedure can address the following imperfections:
- Sagging skin on the midface and under the jawline
- Creases in the lower eyelids and around the mouth
- Fat deposits in the jowls and neck
How long will my facelift revision results last?
Facelift revision patients can enjoy their refreshed appearance for many years. Utilizing proper sun protection and leading a healthy lifestyle can help preserve results for even longer.
Will I have additional scarring after my facelift revision surgery?
Whenever possible, Dr. Chiu tries to use the original incision sites for facelift revision surgery to prevent additional scarring. However, in some cases, patients may benefit from techniques that involve creating additional incisions. Fortunately, Dr. Chiu places all facelift and facelift revision incisions in discreet locations so that they are nearly imperceivable after a full recovery.
Are there other rejuvenation options that do not involve another surgery?
Facial fat transfer is a great way to regain midfacial contour and definition. The procedure uses your own fatty tissue, which is removed from a donor site via liposuction, purified, and re-injected into specific regions of the face for natural, minimally invasive rejuvenation.
