Breast augmentations continue to be the most performed plastic surgery year after year. Breast augmentation can improve a patient’s physical appearance as well as emotional and mental well being.
Many patients are very happy with their implants or eager to get them, but more than a few will reach a point where they have to ask themselves a very common question: What will happen to my implants if or when I get pregnant?
What Is Breast Augmentation and How Long Does It Last?
Breast augmentation is a procedure that enhances the appearance of the breasts by using implants to add volume and change the shape of the bust.
Breast augmentations are often done in conjunction with a breast lift.
For younger patients who may want to become pregnant in the future, it’s important to consider how long the implants are intended to last.
Implants are continuously being improved, and, with consistent upkeep, implants are expected to last at least a decade.
Can You Still Breastfeed With Breast Implants?
Yes. Breast augmentation will not prevent patients from being able to breastfeed.
However, according to the Center for Disease Control, it is possible that breast augmentation can damage the nerves and ducts within the breast and thus impact the volume of milk that is produced.
Can You Breastfeed After a Breast Lift?
Yes. However, there is an increased risk after a breast lift because it involves the removal of excess tissue and a rearrangement of breast tissue.
While this may not completely destroy the milk production apparatus in the breast, it will significantly alter it. Most patients consider a breast lift in order to rejuvenate their breasts after having children and do not intend to get pregnant again.
What Is the Safest Breast Augmentation Option for Breastfeeding?
There are different risks and benefits associated with every breast surgery depending on your individual needs.
In the case of patients who intend to get pregnant and are also considering breast augmentation, breast augmentation through fat transfer may be the best option. Breast fat transfer or natural breast augmentation is the least invasive breast augmentation option.
It utilizes liposuction to remove excess fat from one area of the body and inject it into the breast. This way, there is no need for large incisions, skin removal, or implants, and there is less damage to the milk production ducts within the breast.
