Latest Health News on Breast Implants

Breast augmentation is an exciting procedure that can give women the self-confidence that they lost or were never able to have by giving them beautiful, voluminous breasts. However, like all procedures, breast augmentation comes with some risks and plenty of benefits.

Silicone vs. Saline Implants

While both silicone and saline implants are made with a silicone shell, what’s inside the shell differs. Silicone implants are filled with cohesive gel, while saline implants are filled with sterile salt water (saline). While silicone implants are generally considered to feel more natural than their saline counterparts, there are some who also consider them to be somewhat riskier than saline implants.

When a saline implant leaks or ruptures, the saline leaks into the body where it is safely absorbed. The silicone shell deflates, indicating to the owner of the implants a problem. On the other hand, when silicone implants leak or rupture, the gel is not absorbed by the body and there may not be an outside indication of an issue. This kind of rupture is referred to as a “silent rupture.” While this may sound concerning, severe health risks from a silicone rupture are unlikely. The worst you’re likely to experience is some discomfort until the implants are removed and replaced.

It is recommended that women with silicone implants have an MRI three years after their augmentation procedure and every two years after that to check for a rupture. Any ruptured implant of either variety will need to be removed or replaced.

Breast Implants and Mammograms

Breast implants may possibly make it more difficult for doctors to do an accurate mammogram, but there are special radiographic techniques that can be used if the patient notifies the doctor of the implants. So make sure that you do if you have implants at the time of getting a mammogram.

Health Benefits of Breast Implants

The benefits of breast implants extend beyond just the improvement of the breasts’ appearance. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 98 per cent of women who undergo breast augmentation surgery report satisfaction with their experience. 92 per cent reported improved self esteem, and 64 per cent reported experiencing a higher quality of life.

People with high self esteem are at lower risk for eating disorders and other mental health problems, are more comfortable expressing themselves, have more realistic expectations for themselves and others, and are more able to form healthy relationships – both platonic and romantic. There is also evidence to support the idea that people with higher self esteem also experience better physical health than their counterparts with lower self esteem.
