Corset – Waist Training Frequently Asked Questions

Is waist training dangerous? What does it do to the body?

Corsets have been used for centuries to give a smaller waist. When used appropriately, they are safe. You can benefit from better posture as well as a smaller waist. If you wear it too tight to the point that it restricts your movements, it can make it difficult to breathe. This will not only be uncomfortable, but can also cause injury.

How does it change the bone structure and is the effect permanent if done correctly?

The theory is if you do it long enough, it will it will change your shape and possibly contour your ribs, but for the most part, it pushes your “insides” (intestines, omentum, organs) away from your waist. Of course, when the pressure is off, your insides go back to where they were before.

What are some of the psychological effects of waist training over long periods?

Women can become psychologically dependent on them. Dealing with the discomfort can lead to more moodiness and irritability as well.

Is it irresponsible for celebrities to endorse this?

When used properly and for a limited time, they pose no long term problems.

Historically and currently, what makes the coveted “hourglass” shape so desired by both men and women?

An hourglass shape is synonymous with feminine sex appeal. The smaller waist enhances the bustline and pelvis, drawing a man’s attention to these areas.

Why have we seen something of a resurgence in this practice?

Corsets have been very popular in South America, known as fajas. They have recently gained popularity here due to celebrity use- Kim and Khloe Kardashian, Beyonce, and  Jessica Alba have all been known to use them.
