Men who develop gynecomastia, known informally as man-boobs, can experience a significant knock to their confidence. Plus, they deal with tender breast tissue. Man-boobs can cause men to be uncomfortable taking their shirts off to go swimming or feel like they are unable to wear tight-fitting clothing. This blog will discuss male breast reduction surgery, what the surgery entails, what the benefits are, and what kinds of results can be expected.

What is Gynecomastia?

Feminine curves are not what men want to reveal when undressing. The male breast, like the female breast, contains breast glands. The difference is there are usually much fewer of them in males, and they are non-functional. Gynecomastia is the enlargement of glandular tissue in the male breast. It is a highly common condition affecting at least 30% of all males at some point in their lives. Male breast enlargement is caused by various factors, ranging from hormonal fluctuations to genetics and aging.

It can resolve on its own over time when it occurs in children and adolescents. In adults, it is less likely to resolve on its own. In both cases, affected individuals tend to struggle with feelings of discomfort and self-consciousness with their appearance in and out of clothing and while exercising.

How Can You Tell If You Have Gynecomastia?

There are two types of gynecomastia: true gynecomastia and pseudogynecomastia.

Pseudogynecomastia is a buildup of fat without the glandular mass that is present with true gynecomastia.

True gynecomastia occurs when glandular tissue overdevelops in one or both breasts. This glandular tissue presents as a firm mass that feels different from the surrounding fat tissue.  There may be excess fat tissue and glandular tissue present at the same time, but true gynecomastia always involves overdeveloped glandular tissue.

Both forms of gynecomastia cause psychosocial distress, regardless of the presence of overdeveloped glandular tissue.

Can Exercise Get Rid of Chest Fat?

Many men search the web for the best exercises to get rid of “moobs” fast. While adopting a healthy diet and losing weight in general may reduce fatty tissue in the chest area, this is not always sufficient. For some men, the chest is a stubborn region of the body that does not respond to diet and exercise. In the case of true gynecomastia, no amount of exercise or healthy food can rid the body of excess breast tissue.

That said, it is still a good idea to get as close to your ideal weight as you can, as this will make gynecomastia treatment go more smoothly. If either form of gynecomastia persists, plastic surgery is a viable solution.

How To Get Rid of Gynecomastia

You do not have to live with gynecomastia. Both forms of this condition can be treated surgically, with amazing results.

Male Breast Reduction Surgery

With gynecomastia surgery, excess glandular tissue is surgically removed. Chest definition is improved, asymmetry is corrected, and sometimes nipple size can be reduced. The result is a firmer, more masculine chest contour.

Liposuction

For pseudogynecomastia, liposuction can be used to target stubborn fat deposits in the chest. A cannula (thin, hollow tube) is used to break up and gently suction out excess fat. This procedure can be performed in tandem with gynecomastia surgery if necessary. The result is a firmer, more defined chest.

Dr. Chiu has achieved excellent results for patients with gynecomastia and pseudogynecomastia using both methods. Patients love their new chest definition and increased confidence following either procedure.

What Is Recovery From Gynecomastia Surgery Like?

Gynecomastia surgery and liposuction are both outpatient procedures usually performed under general anesthesia. Your surgeon will provide you with a full list of post-surgical instructions for optimal recovery.

After both surgeries, patients are usually able to return to work within a week. Over the course of several weeks, results will continue improving and more chest definition will become visible. It can take several months for swelling to resolve fully and tissues to tighten.

How Much Does Gynecomastia Surgery Cost?

The cost of surgery depends on a variety of factors, including your goals, anatomy, and more. Dr. Chiu will provide full details about the cost at the time of your consultation.
