One of the most popular and sought-after cosmetic procedures worldwide, breast augmentation offers enhanced volume, shape, and symmetry. Naturally, many patients considering this procedure wonder how long it will last. Although breast implants are not designed to last a lifetime, they can offer enduring results with proper care and monitoring. This blog will explore the lifespan of breast implants, factors that influence their longevity, and when a revision may be necessary.

What Is the Average Lifespan of Breast Implants?

Breast implants today typically last between 10 to 20 years, but some patients have been known to retain their original implants for well beyond 20 years without issue. Others may require revision or removal sooner due to complications or changes in aesthetic preferences.

Technically, implants do not expire. However, the FDA estimates that approximately 20% of patients undergo implant removal or replacement within the first eight to ten years. That said, advancements in implant technology have improved the durability of implants, allowing many patients to keep them for much longer.

What Factors Affect Breast Implant Results?

Several factors influence how long your breast augmentation results may last.

Implant Type

The material your implants are made out of can affect their longevity.

  • Saline implants are filled with saline solution, so they are more at risk for rupture. They are incredibly safe, however, and require smaller incisions because they can be inserted before they are filled with solution.
  • Silicone implants are less prone to deflation and tend to have a longer lifespan. The tradeoff is that ruptures are harder to detect.
  • Gummy bear implants, or highly cohesive silicone implants, are a newer innovation in silicone implant technology designed for increased durability. Due to their cohesive structure, they also have a lower rupture rate and will often stay intact even in the case of rupture.

If you choose an implant that aligns with your lifestyle and suits your frame, you’ll be able to enjoy your results for years to come.

Implant Placement

Implants can be placed under the pectoral muscle (submuscular placement) or above it (subglandular placement).

  • Submuscular placement usually increases implant longevity because there is less strain placed on the implant.
  • Subglandular placement can involve more visible rippling, and sagging can occur over time due to less breast support, at which point patients often seek a revision.

The outcome of placement, however, depends largely on individual anatomy and lifestyle. Many patients are highly satisfied with both placements.

Changes in Breast Tissue

Breast tissue is living tissue and can be altered by physical and lifestyle changes, such as pregnancy, weight fluctuations, and a loss of elasticity as a part of the natural aging process. These can affect the appearance or positioning of the implants. If the breasts lose firmness, an implant revision or breast lift may be required to restore their volume and position.

Implant Complications

Implants are designed to be durable and long-lasting, but complications may arise that cut their lifespan short.

  • Capsular Contracture: Natural scar tissue, called a capsule, forms around breast implants as a regular part of breast augmentation recovery. Sometimes, this natural scar tissue hardens and becomes painful, which can distort the breast shape. This complication requires removal.
  • Implant Rupture: Saline implants are more prone to rupture, and it’s usually noticeable when they do. Silicone ruptures often require an MRI to detect.
  • Implant Displacement: Implants can shift over time due to gravity, trauma, or other factors requiring surgical correction.

Signs That Implants Need to Be Replaced

Breast implants can last decades. As long as they don’t rupture, there is no need to replace them. That said, there are a few signs it may be time to replace your implants.

  • Distorted breast shape
  • Asymmetrical breasts
  • Hardening in one or both breasts
  • Pain in one or both breasts
  • Implant visibility, including rippling or wrinkling
  • Deflation in saline implants
  • Sensation changes in the breast or nipples

Regular monitoring allows you to avoid complications and catch issues early. Consult your plastic surgeon if you notice any of the above.

Having your primary or revision breast augmentation performed by a trusted and highly experienced plastic surgeon minimizes the chances of complications like these and provides a better result overall. Additionally, regular checkups allow for monitoring so you can catch irregularities sooner rather than later.
