Why Scar Revision Is Such a Rewarding Procedure

January 16th, 2018 | Posted in: Scar Revision |

Woman with a scar on her shoulderThere is more than a good chance that you have at least one scar lingering on your body. Perhaps it came from a bad fall when you were a child, possibly a car accident, or maybe it was a lasting mark from a surgical procedure. Whatever the reason, scars can be unsightly, and as much as we try to tell ourselves that scars are “cool,” no one really wants them. That is likely the reason that scar revision is one of the top five most common reconstructive procedures with over 180,000 performed in 2016. Having scars can create numerous side effects, effects that many people would be happy to eliminate. This is why scar revision can be so beneficial and rewarding.

Scars…

Harm Confidence

While scars are a part of life, having unwanted marks on your body can damage your confidence and self-esteem, especially if it’s located in a place that is hard to conceal such as your face, arms, or legs. Scars cause embarrassment and can impede someone’s quality of life. Everyone wants smooth, healthy-looking skin that these marks often have a way of disrupting. Scar revision allows you to have the skin you truly want.

Are a Painful Reminder

Scars are often the result of an injury. And while these injuries may be accompanied by a funny or ironic story of how you got hurt, there are times when scars are the result of a painful or traumatic experience, one that you are reminded of every time you see the mark on your body. Scar revision can help to lessen or take away that painful reminder, allowing you to move on.

Constrict Movement

There are many different types of scars, and each one has distinct characteristics. While some surface scars will not restrict you at all, there are deeper scars known as contracture scars, which are often a result of burns, that can constrict and limit movement. Scar revision can not only aid the cosmetic appearance of the area, but it also contributes to getting you back to life before the scar.

Your Treatment Options

Depending on the extent of your scar, there are several different revision options available. For minor surface scars, treatments such as microdermabrasion are enough to reduce the appearance of the scar. If your scar is “depressed” or sunken in, Dr. Chiu offers fillers such as JUVÉDERM®, Restylane®, or RADIESSE® to fill, raise, and lessen the appearance of the scar. For deep scars, an incision or skin graft may be required to remove the scar.
